Observatory for Human Machine Collaboration

The Observatory of Human-Machine Collaboration is a truly cross-disciplinary project that encourages scinetific collabarations between different department of Cambridge University.

The departments that are currently run their research in the OHMC space are:

The Department of Engineering

The Department of Engineering is one of the few truly integrated engineering departments in the world. It is also the largest department in the University of Cambridge. Its breadth and scale bring unique advantage. The research portfolio develops pinnacles of world-class excellence, which adapt and combine to address a vast array of engineering challenges. Graduate teaching brings students into the heart of the latest research and developments. The undergraduates gain a strong foundation in all engineering disciplines together with in-depth knowledge of their chosen specialist field. Across research, teaching and graduate study, the Department of Engineering offers all its staff, students and industry partners a highly networked community for sharing and developing engineering knowledge.

The Institute of Manufacturing

The IfM is part of the University of Cambridge’s Department of Engineering

Our research aims to help:

  • Companies develop life-changing products and services, build better businesses, create meaningful jobs, and improve the environment for the future.
  • Governments foster innovation and enterprise to deliver social and economic benefits.

Our researchers work on a wide range of manufacturing-related topics including:

  • new materials and advanced production technologies
  • digital manufacturing technologies and data analytics and how they can be used to transform factories, supply chains and business models
  • how new technologies can be nurtured through the development phase and turned into successful businesses.
  • effective business tools and processes (such as roadmapping) that can help organisations achieve their strategic goals.

Through our dissemination arm, IfM Engage, we provide consultancy and professional development to companies of all sizes and to national and regional governments. IfM Engage is owned by the University of Cambridge and our profits are gifted to the University to fund future research.

The Department of Computer Science and Technology

The Department of Computer Science and Technology (known as the Computer Laboratory) is an academic department within the University of Cambridge that encompasses Computer Science, along with many aspects of Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Professor Ann Copestake is the Head of Department.

The Department undertakes research in a broad range of subjects. It has an open and collaborative culture, supporting revolutionary fundamental computer science research, strong cross-cutting collaborations internally and externally, and ideas which transform computing outside the University. Current research areas include bioinformaticscomputer architecturecomputer visiondistributed systemsgraphics and human-computer interactionlogic and semanticsmachine learningnatural language processingnetworking and wireless communicationoperating systems and virtualizationprogrammingsecurity, and sustainable computing.

Cavendish Laboratory, Department of Physics

Since it was founded in 1874, the Cavendish Laboratory has been at the forefront of discovery in physics. The core of the Laboratory’s programme has been, and continues to be, experimental physics, supported by excellence in theory. The policy of the Department is to promote world-leading experimental and theoretical physics in all its diversity. At the same time, the Department encourages applied and collaborative research with our colleagues in other departments, with other Universities and particularly with industry.
